Former England and Chelsea footballer Wayne Bridge has officially withdrawn from his highly anticipated boxing match against YouTuber and Misfits Boxing star KSI, citing deeply personal comments made by his opponent that “crossed a line.” The bout was scheduled for March 29 but will no longer take place.
The decision follows a heated exchange at the Misfits 20 event on Saturday night, where KSI taunted Bridge with remarks referencing a past scandal involving Bridge’s former partner, Vanessa Perroncel, and ex-teammate John Terry. KSI’s comments, delivered with a mix of song and direct jibes, caused tension that required security intervention.
In a statement shared on his Instagram, the 44-year-old ex-footballer expressed his disappointment, explaining his reasons for stepping back:
“I always like to challenge myself, and this felt like a good opportunity. However, I feel like what was said on Saturday crossed a line. These are deeply personal comments that affect my family and others involved. I’m a family man first, and my priority is protecting them.”
Bridge emphasized his love for boxing as a sport and the importance of being a role model for his children, adding that he hoped KSI would reflect on his actions in the future.
“My opponent is someone many children, including my kids, look up to. I hope one day he will look back on this differently. I personally don’t want to be involved in these exchanges,” he said.
Bridge has dabbled in boxing since retiring from football in 2014, even participating in an England Boxing licensed amateur bout and a high-profile win against Spencer Matthews in 2018. Despite this setback, he assured fans of exciting projects on the horizon.
KSI has not yet responded directly to Bridge’s withdrawal but had previously commented on social media, fueling anticipation for the fight.
The controversy has drawn mixed reactions, with some fans and fellow athletes expressing support for Bridge’s decision. Former Premier League winner Danny Simpson tweeted his backing, criticizing KSI’s remarks and calling for respect in the sport.
The Misfits Boxing event, now without one of its marquee fights, will likely adjust its card as it seeks to maintain its growing influence in the crossover boxing scene. Meanwhile, Bridge’s exit highlights the challenges athletes face when personal issues collide with public spectacles.
