Boniface returns to team training ahead Leverkusen clash

Date:

Ahead of their Champions League league phase game against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday, Victor Boniface has returned to team training for Bayer Leverkusen.

The Nigerian has been out with a thigh injury since the November international break and is nearly on the brink of returning to the first team.

However, the game away at Atletico Madrid will likely be too early for Boniface and he could make his comeback against RB Leipzig on Saturday.

Following the injury to Martin Terrier at the weekend, Leverkusen will need Boniface to get back to his best quickly as they continue their pursuit of Bayern Munich.

Last season, the 24-year-old never returned to form following an injury in preparation for the Africa Cup of Nations and needed the summer to get fully fit.

Before his injury, Boniface was one of Leverkusen’s best players with six goals and one assist in 10 games but since his injury, Patrik Schick has overtaken him and looks at his best.

It will be a tough ask for Boniface to potentially displace Schick but head coach Xabi Alonso may be able to find a way to fit them both into the starting 11.
