Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has issued a stern warning to farming and fishing communities in Baga, urging them to refrain from collaborating with Boko Haram insurgents, citing it as a significant threat to the region’s peace and stability.
Speaking during a visit to the palace of the district head in Baga on Wednesday, Governor Zulum stressed the importance of following guidelines set by both the Nigerian military and the Borno government. He urged local farmers to conduct their activities only in areas approved by the military to ensure their safety and the continued stability of the state.
“We support agricultural activities, but it is critical that our people comply with the guidelines to ensure their safety and the stability of the state,” Governor Zulum stated.
The governor’s warning comes after a tragic attack by the Islamic State of the West African Province (ISWAP) in Dumba, a town in Kukawa Local Government Area, where 40 farmers were killed. Governor Zulum condemned any form of collaboration with insurgents, calling it “unacceptable” and detrimental to efforts aimed at restoring peace and order in the state.
In addition to addressing security concerns, Governor Zulum inspected a major agricultural project in Baga, the 2,000-hectare solar-powered surface irrigation system at Mile 3. This initiative is part of the governor’s broader efforts to boost food security and agricultural productivity in the region. He highlighted the importance of this project in reducing production costs and ensuring food sufficiency, in line with President Bola Tinubu’s vision.
Governor Zulum plans to utilize the irrigated land for cassava cultivation following the wheat harvest, emphasizing that this initiative will transform agricultural production in Borno and strengthen its competitive advantage in both wheat and cassava farming.
During the visit, the governor also commended the efforts of the 101 Special Forces Battalion, assuring them of the state government’s continued support. He expressed his commitment to accelerating reconstruction efforts in key sectors such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure in Kukawa and the wider region.
Governor Zulum’s visit to Baga was supported by members of the National Assembly and other top government officials, all of whom reaffirmed their commitment to the ongoing development and security of Borno State.
