Obasa Impeached, Meranda Becomes First Female Speaker in Lagos Assembly History

Date:

In a dramatic turn of events, the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday impeached its Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, amid allegations of fraud.

The lawmakers reached their decision during a plenary session, multiple sources confirmed. Though details of the alleged misconduct remain unclear, Obasa’s removal marks a significant shift in the Assembly’s leadership.

Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda has been sworn in as the new Speaker, making history as the first female to hold the position in Lagos State.

Obasa’s Chief Press Secretary, Eromosele Ebhomele, has yet to respond to inquiries regarding the impeachment.

This development follows recent tensions within the Assembly, including debates over the state’s 2025 budget and responses to economic challenges. The sudden leadership change has sparked widespread speculation about the future direction of the Assembly.

Further updates are expected as investigations into the allegations unfold.
