Chelle Promises to Revive Eagles with Attacking Style, World Cup Ambitions

Date:

The newly appointed head coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, Éric Chelle, has pledged to guide the national team to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, emphasizing an attacking style of play. Chelle, a former player for Mali’s national team, made the commitment during his official unveiling at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, on Monday.

Speaking to journalists, Chelle expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity, thanking the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the Nigerian people for entrusting him with the role. He stated, “Coaching the Super Eagles is an amazing job; I do not take this appointment for granted. I am elated and will do my utmost best.”

Chelle, who has a strong background in football, including playing for clubs like FC Martigues and Valenciennes, is eager to bring success to Nigeria. He emphasized that his coaching philosophy revolves around attacking football, with a focus on scoring goals. “Football is about scoring goals, so I favour an attacking style,” Chelle explained, highlighting his vision for the team.

NFF President Ibrahim Gusau, who was present at the ceremony, expressed full confidence in Chelle’s ability to lead the Super Eagles to success. He noted the coach’s strong spirit and determination, adding, “He sees the job of leading the Super Eagles as his dream job, and that is a huge motivation in itself.”

Chelle’s contract with the NFF is for two years, with the option of a one-year extension contingent upon the Super Eagles’ qualification for the 2026 World Cup. The new coach is also set to work with three assistants to help enhance the team’s performance and global reputation.

As part of his initial tasks, Chelle will support the Super Eagles B team as they prepare for the 8th African Nations Championship, playing a supervisory role. He will work closely with the team to build their performance and establish a foundation for success in the World Cup qualifiers.

The NFF, along with the National Sports Commission (NSC), has assured Chelle of their full support as he embarks on this ambitious journey. With the new coach’s determination and the backing of the nation, there is renewed hope that the Super Eagles will return to the global stage in 2026.
