The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 21-year-old US returnee, David Segun, and three accomplices for allegedly killing an Uber driver during a robbery in the Obalende area of Lagos.
Commissioner of Police, Ishola Olanrewaju, disclosed the arrest while parading the suspects at the state command headquarters on Saturday. According to the CP, Segun, along with Emeka Akwara (19), Samuel Ariori (21), and Lukman Ariori (19), ordered an Uber ride from Chevron in Lekki to Obalende late on Thursday, January 9.
Upon arriving at a secluded location in Obalende, the group allegedly attacked the Uber driver, stabbing him multiple times in the neck in an attempt to steal the vehicle. However, their efforts were thwarted as the car could not be snatched, and two of the suspects were apprehended by local residents who handed them over to the police.
“On January 9, 2025, a case of conspiracy, armed robbery, and murder was reported. The suspects, led by David Segun, robbed and killed the Uber driver at Obalende. The intervention of good Samaritans led to the immediate arrest of two suspects, while the others were later captured in the Chevron area,” CP Olanrewaju stated.
The deceased driver’s body has been deposited at the Mainland Hospital morgue in Yaba. Meanwhile, Segun, described as the gang leader and a US returnee, allegedly struggled with behavioral issues after being sent back to Nigeria by his father.
“This is their leader,” Olanrewaju said, pointing to Segun. “He was deported by his father from America. Despite the mother’s efforts, he remained unmanageable. Sadly, the consequences of societal failure fall on the police, but we are prepared to ensure justice. The suspects will face criminal prosecution starting Monday.”
The CP lamented the senseless nature of the crime, questioning the motive for taking a life over a vehicle of likely limited value.
In addition to the four suspects, the police also paraded individuals arrested for various crimes, including kidnapping, cultism, and carjacking.
Olanrewaju highlighted the success of the command’s intelligence-led policing during the recent Yuletide season, which ensured a peaceful holiday in Lagos despite a surge of over 500,000 Nigerians returning from the diaspora.
The suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.
