Uche Okwukwu Elected as Ohaneze Ndigbo President-General

Date:

In a landmark decision, Chief Bar. Uche Okwukwu has been elected President-General of Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, making history as the first Ikwerre person to lead the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization. The election, held today, January 10, 2025, followed widespread rejection of a previous election conducted on January 5, 2025, by a factional group, which had declared Chief Dr. Jackson Omenazu, also from Ikwerre, as the winner.

According to members of the organization, today’s election is recognized as the legitimate selection process, bringing clarity and unity after the divisive earlier vote. Bar. Okwukwu’s emergence as leader is seen as a breakthrough moment for the Ikwerre people, who have long sought closer ties with the Igbo nation following historical divisions that arose after Nigeria’s civil war.

This election is expected to foster reconciliation and strengthen unity among Ndigbo globally, with hopes that Bar. Okwukwu will bridge gaps, particularly in the South-South and northern Igbo-speaking communities. His leadership is anticipated to address lingering issues of marginalization and promote the cultural and historical connections that bind the Ikwerre and Igbo peoples.

The election is a turning point for Ohaneze Ndigbo, and many are optimistic that Bar. Okwukwu’s tenure will usher in a new era of peace and solidarity for Ndigbo worldwide.
