A New Year Mass turned tragic in Amaimo, Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State, as a Catholic priest allegedly shot and killed a boy who set off fireworks within the church premises. The incident occurred on January 1, 2025, leaving the community in shock and mourning.
According to a Facebook post shared on the “For The Love Of Anambra” page, the priest, whose identity remains undisclosed, fired the fatal shot, reportedly reacting to the disruption caused by the fireworks. The post described the community’s grief and outrage, with calls for a thorough investigation into the incident.
Social media reactions have been mixed, with some condemning the priest’s actions and others urging caution. A Facebook user, Buka Tee, wrote, “Please let there be proper and comprehensive investigation regarding this matter. It should not be swept under the carpet. It’s highly and gravely disheartening.”
Another user, Malachy Chukwunyereugo, expressed anger, stating, “He will spend the rest of his life in prison.”
However, others defended the priest, citing safety concerns and the misuse of fireworks. Icha Joseph commented, “The Rev Father acted in self-defense. Rev Fathers are being murdered every day in the East. They can’t be too careful.”
Another user, Steve Idealmann, added, “How can you target fireworks at worshippers during service? Everyone needs to talk to their children/wards; it’s becoming unbearable.”
Questions have also been raised about how the priest obtained the firearm. Elochukwu Obiegbu asked, “Who gave the Rev Father a gun, or who licensed a gun to him? That is the first question to be directed to the priest.”
Local authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the incident. Residents are demanding a swift investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragic event and ensure justice is served.
