Ogun Police Nab Guards for Allegedly Setting 44-Year-Old Man Ablaze in Sagamu

Date:

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested two security guards for allegedly setting a 44-year-old man, Basiru Aliu, on fire after mistaking him for a thief. The incident occurred in the Agura Sabo area of Sagamu, Ogun State.

According to a statement from the Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, the suspects, Segun Sodiya and Segun Abatan, attacked Aliu while he was helping his employer, Fatai Ifekoya, move belongings from one residence to another in the Ijokun area.

The assault took place around 7 a.m. on Monday when the two security guards, who were employed by a resident, Kingsley Nwabueze, mistook Aliu for a thief. The suspects allegedly poured a flammable substance on the victim and set him ablaze, believing he was attempting to steal items from Ifekoya’s property.

The shocking attack was reported by Ifekoya to the police, who quickly responded and arrested Sodiya and Abatan. They are now facing charges of attempted murder, and investigations are ongoing.

Odutola urged the public to avoid taking matters into their own hands and instead report suspicious activities to the authorities to prevent such tragic incidents. “We encourage locals to report any suspicious activity to the police rather than resorting to violence,” she said.

Aliu is currently receiving medical treatment, and the police have vowed to ensure justice is served in this tragic case.
