The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested 33-year-old Obinna Nwigwe for allegedly shooting his friend, Andrew Philemon, during a heated argument at Najob Guest House in Bwari.
In a statement released on Tuesday, FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed that the shooting occurred on Thursday when police responded to a distress call reporting gunfire. Officers arrived at the scene to find Philemon critically injured from a gunshot wound.
Nwigwe, who was armed with a pump-action rifle, claimed that the shooting was in self-defense after the argument escalated. Police arrested him at the scene and later discovered a disturbing arsenal of weapons at his residence.
A search of Nwigwe’s home revealed a cache of dangerous items, including five Dane guns, an English-made single-barrelled gun, an AK-47 magazine with 29 live rounds of ammunition, four live cartridges, 17 spent cartridges, a bow and arrows, various knives, a sword-stick, a toy gun, a taser, a bulletproof jacket, and several sets of police uniforms and boots.
Philemon is currently receiving treatment at the National Hospital in Abuja, while Nwigwe remains in police custody pending further investigation.
The FCT Police Command has vowed to continue tackling violent crime and ensuring the safety of residents. The FCT Police Commissioner, Tunji Disu, emphasized the importance of community vigilance in maintaining security. He urged citizens to report any suspicious activities to the authorities, stressing the dangers of illegal firearm possession.
“The safety and security of our community rely on the active participation of all citizens,” Disu said.
