The Kano State Government has strongly opposed the proposed tax reform bills currently before the National Assembly, describing them as detrimental to the welfare of Nigerians, particularly in the north.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, declared the state’s stance during a New Year celebration held at the Filin Mahaha, Kofar Naisa open theatre. The event, highlighted in a statement by the deputy governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Garba Shu’aibu, emphasized the government’s disapproval of the bill.
“This tax reform bill is not the solution to our economic challenges. Kano State stands firmly against any policy that negatively affects the welfare of our people,” Governor Yusuf stated.
The governor criticized the proposed tax hikes as “ill-timed, lopsided, and inimical to the unity of the country.” He urged the federal government to prioritize addressing extreme poverty and hunger, particularly in the northern regions grappling with hyperinflation and insecurity.
Amid the criticism, Governor Yusuf highlighted his administration’s achievements, including advancements in healthcare, education, road construction, and foreign scholarship programs. He also reminded residents of his confirmation as Kano’s duly elected governor by the Supreme Court in January 2024.
Additionally, the reinstatement of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II in 2024 was celebrated as a victory for the people’s will. The governor reiterated the state’s legal authority to appoint Emirs and called on those interfering in Kano Emirate affairs to respect the law and promote peace.
Deputy Governor Gwarzo urged Kano residents to remain united and resilient, declaring, “Let 2025 be a year of shared prosperity and progress. Together, we will build a stronger Kano.”
The statement underscores Kano State’s commitment to championing policies that uplift its residents while calling for a national focus on tackling poverty and insecurity.
