Former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has publicly criticized Dr. Peter Odili, another former governor of the state, over comments Odili allegedly made about the current administration and past governors. Speaking in a passionate address on Sunday, Wike accused Odili of ingratitude and hypocrisy, citing numerous instances where he claimed to have supported Odili both during and after their respective tenures in office.
Wike’s reaction was prompted by statements reportedly made by Odili, suggesting that the current Rivers State Governor has surpassed the achievements of all his predecessors. Wike described Odili’s remarks as contradictory, given that Odili had previously praised him as the best governor in the state’s history.
Wike recalled that when he assumed office in 2015, Odili had been largely absent from political relevance. He claimed to have revitalized Odili’s standing by facilitating projects like the establishment of PAMO University and ensuring financial support for its students.
“Odili was gone politically. I had to rescue him,” Wike stated, adding that he even commissioned a mansion for Odili and his wife, which Odili had publicly lauded at the time.
Wike also accused Odili of nepotism, alleging that his family has disproportionately benefited from positions of power in the state. According to Wike, Odili’s wife serves as Chairperson of a governing council, while one daughter is a commissioner, another a judge, and Odili himself maintains significant influence in state affairs.
“Who is now turning Rivers State into a personal estate?” Wike asked rhetorically, contrasting Odili’s actions with his earlier criticism of others.
Wike expressed disappointment that Odili has shifted his allegiance to the current administration, stating that he had been instrumental in Odili’s reconciliation with political figures, including former Governor Celestine Omehia.
“He did Christmas carols for me when I was in office. Now, he’s doing the same for someone he once dismissed,” Wike remarked, suggesting that Odili’s actions were motivated by a desire to remain close to power.
Wike concluded by asserting his focus on his current responsibilities in Abuja, dismissing Odili’s comments as envy and an attempt to undermine his achievements. He also warned that further provocations might lead him to reveal more details about Odili’s tenure and actions.
“This envy won’t get him to my level,” Wike said, adding that he would continue to concentrate on his work and ignore distractions.
The escalating tension between Wike and Odili underscores ongoing rivalries among key political figures in Rivers State, reflecting deeper divisions within the state’s political landscape. Observers note that this public fallout could have implications for future alliances and governance in the region.
