Vice President Kashim Shettima has extended an apology to the families of civilians who lost their lives in the recent military airstrikes in Silame Local Government Area, Sokoto State. The strikes, conducted on December 25, targeted the logistics base of the Lakurawa insurgent group but inadvertently claimed the lives of 10 civilians.
In a statement issued on Saturday by his media aide, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima expressed deep regret over the incident, describing it as a rare but tragic consequence of counter-terrorism operations. He offered heartfelt condolences to the affected families and the Sokoto State Government.
“I must say we are sorry and dismayed at the civilian casualties incurred and the excruciating pain that ensues in these extremely difficult times,” Shettima said.
The Vice President acknowledged the challenges faced by military personnel in distinguishing terrorists from innocent civilians, urging continued support for the armed forces. He emphasized that the tragedy underscores the sacrifices made by the military to protect the nation and eradicate terrorism.
Shettima assured the victims’ families of the Federal Government’s unwavering commitment to peace and security. He also called for community cooperation to provide vital intelligence to enhance the precision and effectiveness of military operations.
“On behalf of our gallant officers, I apologize for this great loss. I urge you to continue to give our brave officers the assistance they need in carrying out their operations to ensure a safer country for all of us,” he added.
The Vice President reiterated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to eliminating terror groups and ensuring a peaceful Nigeria where citizens can live without fear of attacks. He pledged that the government would not relent until the remnants of insurgent elements were eradicated.
The airstrikes, part of the coordinated Operation Fansan Yamma, targeted the Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities, which were believed to be strongholds of the Lakurawa insurgents. Despite their success in dismantling the group’s logistics base, the civilian casualties have cast a shadow over the operation.
Shettima’s statement highlighted the importance of collective efforts in tackling insecurity, urging Nigerians to support the military in its mission to restore peace and safety across the nation.
