Rodri, Bellingham, Vinicius Jr Make IFFHS World Team of the Year

Date:

The International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) has unveiled its Men’s World Team of the Year for 2024, with Real Madrid dominating the selection. Five stars from the Spanish giants feature in the prestigious line-up, a reflection of their impressive performances in 2023-24, which saw them secure both the Champions League and La Liga titles.

Among the notable Real Madrid players included is Jude Bellingham, who joins a formidable midfield trio alongside Toni Kroos and Ballon d’Or winner Rodri. Bellingham’s stellar performances helped propel Los Blancos to victory in Europe’s premier club competition, cementing his place in the team. Fellow Real Madrid stars, including FIFA Men’s Player of the Year Vinicius Jr., veteran defender Dani Carvajal, and Antonio Rudiger, also earned spots in the team, further highlighting their dominance.

The squad, set in a 4-3-3 formation, is anchored by Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez, who is one of just four Premier League representatives. Joining Martinez in the squad are Manchester City’s Rodri, Ruben Dias, and Erling Haaland, with Haaland also leading the attack alongside Lamine Yamal, who impressed with Spain at the European Championship.

While the squad boasts a mix of established stars and rising talents, some notable exclusions have surprised fans. Kylian Mbappe, a constant presence in the IFFHS Team of the Year since 2020, is notably absent for the first time, despite his strong performances with PSG before his move to Real Madrid. The exclusion comes as a result of his form earlier in the year, which contributed to the end of his four-year streak.

Also missing from this year’s team are Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Mohamed Salah, despite their success in the 2023-24 season. Messi’s exclusion is particularly surprising, given his continuing influence on the pitch, while Ronaldo’s and Salah’s absences reflect the changing landscape of football talent at the top level.

With Real Madrid’s dominance in this year’s squad, the IFFHS Men’s World Team of the Year is a testament to the club’s continued excellence on the global stage. Bellingham’s inclusion alongside legends like Kroos and Vinicius Jr. highlights the ongoing success of the Spanish giants, who continue to set the standard in world football.
