Lawyer: Burna Boy Using Influence Over Police in Speed Darlington Defamation Case

Date:

Controversial rapper Darlington Achakpo, popularly known as Speed Darlington or Akpi, remains in police custody despite a court ruling ordering his release, according to his lawyer, Stan Alieke. In an interview with Saturday Beats, Alieke alleged that Grammy-winning singer Burna Boy is leveraging his influence to prolong his client’s detention.

“There is no denying that there are a lot of powerful persons interested in this matter. On one hand, we have Burna Boy, and on the other hand, the police seem to be acting based on sentiments and emotions rather than the law,” Alieke stated. He emphasized that court rulings should be respected regardless of personal feelings or influence.

The feud reportedly stems from videos Speed Darlington made about Burna Boy, which the latter deemed defamatory. Alieke disclosed that the matter had been brought before the Deputy Inspector General of Police in Abuja, where both parties attempted to resolve the issue.

“Burna’s lawyer claimed he had lost numerous gigs because of the videos. He requested a public apology, which we agreed to and even drafted,” Alieke explained. Despite this, Speed Darlington was charged to court in November, and the case has since stagnated, with no significant proceedings taking place.

Alieke expressed concern over his client’s health and the conditions of his detention. He revealed that Speed Darlington has been unwell, has not been eating properly, and is not receiving adequate care.

“His family is heartbroken and traumatised. I saw him two days ago and insisted the police take him to the hospital. His mother and brother call me almost every night, deeply worried,” Alieke said, adding that the rapper remains in high spirits despite his circumstances.

Alieke criticized Burna Boy’s alleged use of police influence, stating that defamation claims should be handled in court. “If Burna claims defamation, the proper step is to seek legal remedies through the judiciary, not through police actions,” he asserted.

As the case continues to attract public attention, many are calling for adherence to legal protocols and fair treatment for Speed Darlington.
