NAF Announces Acquisition of 24 Jets, 10 Helicopters

Date:

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has announced plans to enhance its air capabilities with the acquisition of 24 M-346 Fighter Ground Attack jets and 10 AW-109 Trekker Helicopters. This move is part of ongoing efforts to bolster Nigeria’s military readiness in the fight against insurgency.

The Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, made the announcement during a Christmas luncheon with NAF personnel in Maiduguri on Wednesday. He emphasized that the new acquisitions, alongside previously procured aircraft such as the A-29 Super Tucanos, JF-17 Thunders, and T129 Attack Helicopters, would significantly strengthen the NAF’s operational capabilities.

“Given the current security challenges facing our country, it is crucial that we continue to acquire modern, versatile platforms to enhance our operational readiness and tackle insurgency more effectively,” said Abubakar.

He further assured that NAF would continue to prioritize personnel training, capacity-building initiatives, and research and development to improve overall efficiency in their operations.

The CAS also took the opportunity to thank the NAF personnel for their dedication and sacrifices, particularly during the festive period. “You are standing as the true guardians of our nation’s peace and security. For that, I cannot thank you enough,” he said. He also acknowledged the invaluable contributions of fallen heroes who have lost their lives in service to the country, urging the personnel to reflect on their sacrifices during the holiday season.

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State, who was represented by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Prof. Usman Tar, also praised the role of the Nigerian Air Force in the fight against terrorism and its humanitarian efforts in the northeast, especially Borno State.

“We cannot forget the timely intervention of the Nigerian Air Force during the recent flood disaster in Maiduguri,” Tar said. “From intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance to airlifting relief materials and conducting medical outreach, the NAF has consistently demonstrated its resilience and commitment to service.”

Governor Zulum and the people of Borno expressed their deep appreciation for the sacrifices made by the NAF, noting that their contributions were vital not only to security but also to the well-being of the local population.

The announcement of these new acquisitions signals the Nigerian Air Force’s continued commitment to enhancing its capabilities and ensuring the safety and security of the nation.
