The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has expressed unwavering support for Nigeria and other member states following recent allegations made by Niger’s military government.

In a statement released on Friday, ECOWAS rejected Niger’s accusations of interference, asserting that the bloc’s actions are rooted in its mission to promote peace, stability, and good governance across the region.

“ECOWAS stands united with its member states against unfounded allegations. Our priority remains the restoration of democratic norms and the stability of our region,” the statement declared.

The dispute stems from tensions between ECOWAS and Niger’s junta, which took power in a coup earlier this year. Since the takeover, ECOWAS has imposed sanctions and repeatedly called for the restoration of constitutional rule. The allegations from Niger accuse Nigeria and other nations of undue influence within ECOWAS, a claim the bloc denies, emphasizing that its decisions reflect the consensus of all 15 member states.

Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who currently chairs ECOWAS, has been a vocal advocate for restoring democracy in Niger through diplomatic means while maintaining firm measures to deter military rule.

Regional analysts view the situation as a critical test for ECOWAS, which has faced challenges in balancing diplomatic efforts and sanctions to resolve the political crisis in Niger.

ECOWAS urged Niger’s leadership to engage in constructive dialogue, emphasizing its commitment to peaceful resolutions and regional integration. The bloc has called on all member states to remain united in addressing the crisis, ensuring that democracy and stability prevail across West Africa.
