The Lagos State Safety Commission has raised alarms over increasing overcrowding in nightclubs and lounges across the city, cautioning that such practices pose severe safety risks to patrons, staff, and the general public.
Director General and CEO of the Safety Commission, Mr. Lanre Mojola, issued a statement underscoring the importance of adhering to authorized occupancy limits as approved by the Commission. While acknowledging the economic benefits of Lagos’ vibrant nightlife, Mojola emphasized that safety must remain a top priority.
“On no account should any nightclub allow overcrowding, which poses significant safety risks, including the potential for fire hazards, smoking in public spaces, compromised emergency exits, and increased likelihood of accidents,” Mojola stated.
To enforce compliance, the Commission has launched a series of inspections targeting hospitality venues. Mojola warned that any establishment found violating safety regulations would face immediate closure and possible legal actions.
He urged nightclub and lounge owners to strictly adhere to safety measures and occupancy limits set by the Commission, reiterating that these guidelines are designed to ensure the well-being of everyone involved.
“We appreciate the cooperation of all stakeholders in maintaining a safe and enjoyable environment for all. Let us work together to keep Lagos safe and thriving,” Mojola added.
The Commission encourages venue operators and the public to reach out for guidance or report safety concerns via their dedicated helpline at 07000SAFETY.
This proactive stance aims to strike a balance between supporting Lagos’ nightlife economy and safeguarding lives, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the city’s vibrant entertainment scene responsibly.
