NDDC Acts on Presidential Directive, Begins Restoration of Key Niger Delta Road

Date:

The much-neglected Port Harcourt-Owerri Road, a vital link between the South-South and Eastern Nigeria, has received much-needed attention as the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) begins repairs on the road. This intervention follows a directive from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the Commission to address the deteriorating state of major roads in the Niger Delta region.

Work has already resumed, bringing relief to many commuters who had long struggled with the road’s poor condition. Commercial bus drivers and other travelers have expressed their gratitude, calling the intervention timely. One driver, Kinsley Okorigwe, noted that the repair work was especially welcome during the busy Christmas season.

The NDDC Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, recently visited the site to inspect the ongoing repairs at the failed sections of the road between Umuapu and Umuagwo in Imo State. Ogbuku explained that the road’s dilapidated state made immediate action necessary to prevent further hardship for commuters.

“We have mobilized construction companies to carry out emergency repairs to ensure that the road becomes motorable again as quickly as possible,” Ogbuku said during the inspection. “The President’s directive has allowed us to act swiftly to alleviate the suffering of the people.”

The NDDC CEO also commended the Federal Government for responding promptly to public calls for the rehabilitation of the road. He assured the public that the restoration work would be durable and stand the test of time once completed.

Ogbuku praised the contractor for their commitment to finishing the repairs on schedule and urged commuters and local communities to be patient and understanding during the construction period.

“As an interventionist agency, we are here to complement the efforts of the Federal and State Governments to make life easier for the people of the Niger Delta region,” Ogbuku added.

With the resumption of work, the NDDC is working to ensure smoother and safer travel on this key route, providing long-awaited relief for those who rely on the Port Harcourt-Owerri Road for daily transportation.
