Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, has signed the 2025 Appropriation Bill into law, amounting to N971 billion, promising diligent implementation of the budget to accelerate economic growth and inclusive prosperity for the state.
The budget, termed the “Budget of Exponential Growth and Inclusive Prosperity,” allocates a significant N837.9 billion (86%) to capital expenditure, with N133.1 billion (14%) earmarked for recurrent expenses. A key highlight of the budget is the continued prioritization of education, with N320.6 billion, or over 33% of the total allocation, dedicated to the sector for the second consecutive year.
At the signing ceremony held on Tuesday, Governor Mbah expressed gratitude to the Enugu State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Hon. Uchenna Ugwu, for the swift passage of the bill. He described the budget as a “massive Christmas gift” to the people of Enugu and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to leaving no one behind in the state’s development.
“We have recognized that marginal growth is insufficient. This budget embodies our strategy for exponential growth to ensure that no child or individual in Enugu goes to bed hungry,” said Governor Mbah, adding that the budget would come into effect on January 1, 2025, pushing the state closer to its development goals.
Speaker Ugwu, who praised the collaborative effort between the Assembly and the executive, emphasized that the Assembly’s involvement in the budget’s preparation ensured the smooth passage without the need for amendments. He reiterated the legislature’s commitment to effective oversight, ensuring the successful execution of the 2025 fiscal plan.
Highlighting the prioritization of education, Ugwu stressed that the substantial allocation to the sector underscores the governor’s dedication to tackling poverty and fostering sustainable growth through education. He noted that the administration’s visible progress across various sectors, including education, healthcare, infrastructure, and tourism, is a testament to Governor Mbah’s leadership and determination to improve the lives of Enugu residents.
The 2025 budget, with its focus on education and strategic development, is poised to propel Enugu State toward a future of prosperity and well-being for its citizens.
