In a swift and intense operation on December 19, 2024, the Imo State Police Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit successfully neutralized three suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN). The encounter, which took place in Orogwe, Owerri West Local Government Area, resulted in the recovery of weapons and stolen vehicles but also tragically claimed the lives of two brave officers.
The operation was the result of extensive investigations and intelligence gathering, with the suspects initially opening fire upon sighting the police. Three of the criminals were killed on the spot while two others, identified as David Ifeanyichukwu and Abuchi Joseph, were apprehended. These individuals were connected to a previous abduction incident on November 12, 2024, during which they kidnapped Osuji Caleb Chimereze and three others and stole a Mercedes Benz along with other valuables.
During the confrontation, authorities recovered an arsenal of six AK-47 rifles, 131 rounds of live ammunition, a locally made firearm, and two stolen vehicles. Despite the success in apprehending some suspects and seizing dangerous weapons, the operation resulted in the loss of two dedicated police officers, who sustained injuries during the firefight but ultimately succumbed to their wounds.
In response to this incident, the Imo State Police Command has intensified its patrols and security operations to ensure a safe and peaceful holiday season. The command remains committed to capturing any remaining members of the criminal group and is urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities promptly to aid in maintaining public safety.
As Imo State prepares for the festive season, the Police Commissioner has emphasized the importance of community cooperation in maintaining peace and order. The efforts reflect a broader commitment to protecting residents and ensuring that the holiday season is marked by safety and security.
