Ibadan Stampede: Former Ooni Queen, Oriyomi Hamzat Among Those Facing Court Today

The Oyo State Police Command has announced the release of five individuals arrested in connection with the tragic stampede at the Ibadan funfair that resulted in the deaths of 35 children. The incident took place at the Islamic High School in Orita Basorun, Ibadan. However, six remaining suspects, including Naomi Silekunola, the former wife of the Ooni of Ife, Oriyomi Hamzat, the owner of Agidigbo FM, and Fasasi Abdulahi, the principal of the school, are set to be arraigned in court today.

According to police sources, the five individuals released on Monday include Genesis Christopher (24), Tanimowo Moruf (52), Anisolaja Olabode (42), Idowu Ibrahim (35), and Abiola Oluwatimilehin (25). These individuals were detained during the investigation into the deadly stampede, but their release comes as the authorities continue their probe.

The arraignment of the remaining suspects will take place on Tuesday. Among those facing legal proceedings is Oriyomi Hamzat, who was reportedly arrested while in the hospital. Authorities have been working to address the tragic incident, which has shocked the community and raised concerns about safety protocols at large public events.

Governor Seyi Makinde, along with Southern governors, paid a condolence visit to the families affected by the tragedy, underlining the gravity of the situation and the state’s commitment to ensuring justice for the victims.
