Kano Unveils N80bn Tax Collection, Defaulter Prosecution Plan for 2025

Date:

Kano State Government has unveiled plans to generate N80 billion in revenue for 2025, alongside a strong stance against tax defaulters, with promises of prosecution for those who fail to comply with tax regulations.

In a statement released on Saturday by Governor Abba Yusuf’s spokesperson, Sanusi Dawakin-Tofa, the administration emphasized its commitment to tax reforms that focus on improving efficiency rather than increasing tax rates. Dr. Zaid Abubakar, Executive Chairman of the Kano State Internal Revenue Service, shared the news during a presentation at the ongoing High-Level Retreat for top government officials in Kaduna.

Abubakar explained that the reform initiative is designed to streamline tax collection processes and ensure full compliance with tax laws, with a particular focus on prosecuting defaulters starting in 2025. This move reflects the government’s resolve to enhance its revenue base while holding citizens accountable for their tax obligations.

Governor Yusuf’s administration also outlined an ambitious revenue target of over N20 billion per quarter in 2025. The new approach comes after the governor appointed fresh leadership for the revenue service, which has already shown promising improvements in performance over the last two quarters of 2024.

The statement further revealed that the state will introduce a new model for tax collection, aimed at boosting revenue generation to support the fulfillment of the governor’s campaign promises. The initiative is seen as a crucial step in financing key development projects across the state, enhancing infrastructure, education, healthcare, and other critical sectors.

With a clear focus on sustainability and compliance, the Kano State Government aims to significantly strengthen its fiscal position in the coming year.
