IGP Crackdown on Unsafe Funfairs, Palliative Events Nationwide

Date:

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a directive banning unauthorized distribution of palliatives and funfairs across Nigeria, citing growing concerns over public safety during such events.

The warning follows a string of tragic incidents, including stampedes that have claimed multiple lives during the festive season. On December 18, 2024, a stampede at a children’s funfair in Ibadan, Oyo State, resulted in the deaths of at least 35 children and left many critically injured. A similar tragedy occurred on December 21 at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja, where 10 individuals died, and many were injured during the distribution of food items to vulnerable groups.

In Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, another palliative distribution by a philanthropist, Obi Jackson, turned deadly, with three fatalities and several injuries reported.

Speaking to reporters in Abuja, Force Public Relations Officer ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi highlighted the lack of a structured approach to distributing palliatives, leading to chaos, long queues, and dangerous confrontations.

“The IGP has called on government officials, community leaders, and NGOs to establish an organized framework for distributing aid. Negligence during such events is criminal and will not be overlooked,” Adejobi said, referencing provisions in the Penal Code and Criminal Code.

The IGP also urged event organizers to involve security agencies to prevent crowd-related incidents and ensure public safety. He warned that violations of this directive would result in legal action.

“The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to creating a safer and more structured environment for aid distribution in collaboration with relevant stakeholders,” Adejobi added.

Egbetokun has instructed commissioners in affected states to launch thorough investigations into the incidents for potential legal action. He also expressed sympathy for the bereaved families and wished the injured a swift recovery.

The directive underscores the urgent need for improved crowd management strategies to prevent further tragedies during humanitarian and festive activities.
