The Federal Government has successfully reinstalled solar-powered lights, CCTV cameras, and security posts on the Second Niger Bridge, restoring the multi-billion naira infrastructure to full functionality and addressing concerns over safety and usability.
Spanning the Delta State and Anambra State axis, the bridge, which had been shrouded in darkness following the vandalism of its lighting system shortly after its inauguration in May 2023, is now fully illuminated. This development has significantly improved security and encouraged vehicular movement, particularly as the festive season approaches.
Motorists and residents have expressed relief and satisfaction with the new installations. A commercial transport operator, Uche Ifiowu, described the move as “a welcome development” that has alleviated fears of insecurity and improved the overall driving experience. “The bridge is now a safer and more attractive option for travelers,” Ifiowu said.
Similarly, Ebuka Nzeobi, Vice-Chairman of the Anambra Drivers Welfare Union, highlighted the economic benefits brought by the reinstated facilities. “Commercial and economic activities are springing up around the bridge. Restaurants and other businesses are now operational, transforming the area into a budding economic hub,” Nzeobi stated.
Uchenna Orji, Special Adviser (Media) to the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, confirmed the government’s commitment to providing critical infrastructure that ensures safety and ease of movement. He urged local communities to take ownership of the facilities and protect them from future vandalism.
“The installation of solar-powered lights, CCTV, and security posts is part of a broader federal initiative to enhance economic road infrastructure across the country,” Orji noted. “These measures are aimed at improving security and ensuring that critical assets like the Second Niger Bridge remain operational and safe for public use.”
The bridge, a vital link between western and eastern Nigeria, is now positioned to accommodate increased traffic flow during the holiday season, easing congestion on the older Niger Bridge and boosting economic activities along its route. The Federal Government also reassured Nigerians that similar upgrades are being extended to other key roadways nationwide.
