Victor Boniface has been pictured back in training with Bayer Leverkusen ahead of their final Bundesliga clash of the year on Saturday against SC Freiburg at the BayArena.
The Super Eagles striker has been nursing a hamstring injury which has made him miss the last seven games across all competitions for Bayer Leverkusen.
Xabi Alonso has largely relied on Patrik Schick and Nathan Tella to lead the attack in his absence, though he used Martin Terrier to lead the line last weekend when they defeated Frank Onyeka’s Augsburg 2-0.
The current Bundesliga champions have won all games in the absence of Boniface and are back in the race for the league title, as they now trail table-toppers Bayern Munich with four points.
The potential return of last season’s Rookie of the Season will no doubt be a boost for the Black and Reds as they seek to end the year on a high and possibly reduce the distance from the top of the table.
Before his injury, the Nigeria international was in good form, having netted eight goals and provided one assist in 15 games across all competitions.
He may likely start Saturday’s game against Freiburg from the bench, but he should be able to get some minutes in the game to boost his fitness.
Meanwhile, Boniface looks set to signing a new contract with Bundesliga champions.
Boniface has established himself as Die Werkself’s leading scorer since his arrival at the BayArena two years ago.
The 23-year-old registered 21 goals and 10 assists to help Xabi Alonso’s side win the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal last season.
The forward has been linked with a move away from the club in recent weeks.
In a bid to ward off interest in the striker, Leverkusen have offered him a new contract, according to Transfer News Live.
Boniface has four years left on his contract with the club.
The striker is currently recuperating from the injury he sustained on international duty last month.
