Makinde arrests Ibadan Carnival organisers, commiserates with mourning families

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has confirmed the arrest of the organisers of a children’s funfair in Ibadan, Oyo State, following the tragic stampede that happened on Wednesday, at the Islamic High School, Basorun, which reportedly resulted in multiple casualties.

Makinde confirmed the arrests on his official X account.

Though the exact number of casualties has yet to be confirmed, viral videos on X showed children among those affected by the tragedy.

Makinde, in a statement, expressed his condolences, calling the incident a “very sad day” for the state.

He confirmed the deaths and injuries, offering sympathies to the grieving families.

“Our hearts remain with the families and loved ones impacted by this tragedy. May the souls of the departed rest in peace,” Makinde said.

The governor assured the public that security agents were deployed to restore order at the scene and prevent further casualties.

Medical personnel and ambulances were also sent to assist the victims.

The state government is taking steps to ensure the safety and security of the venue.

The organisers of the event have since been arrested, and investigations are ongoing.

Makinde warned that anyone responsible for the disaster, either directly or indirectly, would be held accountable.

“While investigations are ongoing, the primary organisers of the event that led to this stampede have been taken into custody.

“I want to reassure our people that anyone directly or remotely involved in this disaster will be held accountable. Please remain calm as the security agencies investigate this unfortunate incident.

“Our hearts remain with the families and loved ones impacted by this tragedy. May the souls of the departed rest in peace,” he stated.

State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, confirmed that victims were being treated in various hospitals across Ibadan.

He advised parents of missing children to check local medical facilities, including Patnas Hospital, Western Hospital, Ringroad State Hospital, Molly Specialist Hospital, and University College Hospital, where affected children have been taken for medical attention.
