NDLEA Halts N4.4bn Drug Shipment from India

Date:

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has successfully intercepted 636,600 bottles of codeine-based syrup, valued at N4.4 billion, at the Port Harcourt Port Complex in Onne, Rivers State. The seizure was made in a joint operation involving NDLEA officers, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), and other security agencies.

According to NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, the drugs were shipped from India and intercepted across three separate shipments on December 9, 11, and 13, 2024. The agency’s operatives acted on credible intelligence, leading to the joint examination of four containers, which contained the illicit substances.

“This significant operation reflects the agency’s ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and abuse across Nigeria,” Babafemi said. The intercepted codeine syrup, commonly abused as a recreational drug, has a street value of N4.4bn.

In addition to the successful interception, the NDLEA continues its nationwide War Against Drug Abuse, with sensitization activities taking place in schools, worship centers, workplaces, and communities. The agency is actively working to reduce the impact of drug abuse and trafficking on Nigerian society.

NDLEA Chairman Buba Marwa commended the officers involved in the operation, noting that the seizures demonstrate the agency’s capability to disrupt illegal drug trade networks before they reach Nigerian shores.

The NDLEA’s efforts remain vital in curbing the rise of illicit drug use and trafficking, with continued operations and public awareness campaigns across the country.
