CAF AWARDS: Falcons win Women’s National Team of the Year award

Date:

The Super Falcons of Nigeria have won the prestigious Women’s National Team of the Year award at the 2024 CAF Awards in Marrakech, Morocco.

This recognition comes after a solid year of performance that, despite some challenges, saw them retain their status as Africa’s highest-ranked women’s team in the latest FIFA rankings.

The Falcons ended the year 2024 ranked 36th globally, holding onto their position despite tough competition and a mixed bag of results, including a disappointing campaign at the Paris Olympics where they failed to progress past the group stage.

However, their impressive record in African football, including back-to-back victories over Algeria in international friendlies, continued to highlight their dominance on the continent.

The award was presented to the Nigeria Football Federation president Ibrahim Gusau, who dedicated it to First Lady Oluremi Tinubu.

Gusau acknowledged the Falcons’ resilience despite the setbacks, with standouts like Rasheedat Ajibade and Chiamaka Nnadozie offering moments of brilliance throughout the year.

While the team’s global ranking remains far from their peak of 23rd (achieved in 2004-2005), their performance in Africa remains unmatched, and they continue to be the most successful national team in the continent’s history, with nine African titles to their name.

As they look ahead to 2025, the Falcons will aim to improve their global standing and prepare for upcoming major tournaments.

This award reaffirms their place as the top women’s football team in Africa and sets the stage for future achievements.
