Manchester City are reportedly exploring a surprise move to sign Paul Pogba, just as the Manchester derby approaches. The former Manchester United midfielder is set to return to action in March following his doping suspension, and the reigning champions have “sounded out” the possibility of bringing him back to the Premier League.
City manager Pep Guardiola is keen to bolster his midfield options, especially after Ballon d’Or winner Rodri sustained an ACL injury that has disrupted their title defense. Recent reports suggest Guardiola may break his pattern and spend in the January transfer window for the first time in seven years, with Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes and Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi also on his radar.
However, according to The Independent, Pogba is being considered as a more unconventional option. Despite his talent, the move could spark controversy due to Pogba’s strong ties to City’s arch-rivals, Manchester United.
While City may be interested, Pogba reportedly has reservations about returning to England, citing his history with United and personal preference for a move to La Liga, Serie A, or the Bundesliga. At 31, the French World Cup winner remains determined to continue playing at the top level, despite the challenges he’s faced.
Pogba is currently serving an 18-month ban for testing positive for the performance-enhancing substance DHEA in August 2023. Initially handed a four-year suspension, the ban was reduced on appeal. His contract with Juventus was terminated as a result, and he will be eligible to train with a club starting in January.
In an emotional statement in October, Pogba declared his innocence:
“I am not a cheater. I love my sport and the game itself. I would never cheat—I like to win fairly. It’s been tough training alone, but my focus is on getting fit and returning to the pitch to do what I love.”
Pogba, who made 233 appearances across two spells with Manchester United, left the club on a free transfer in 2022 to rejoin Juventus. The Frenchman, known for his creativity and technical prowess, has had a rollercoaster career punctuated by moments of brilliance and controversy.
