The Federal Government has urged health authorities to activate heightened alert systems in response to the newly detected XEC COVID-19 variant, which is rapidly spreading worldwide.
The variant, first identified in Australia, has now been confirmed in 29 countries.
In a letter dated December 5, the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare directed health officials to be vigilant about the new strain, which has shown a growth advantage over other circulating variants.

“I am directed to inform you of a newly detected XEC COVID-19 variant which has been reported in Australia and has already spread to 29 countries globally,” stated Dr. O.N. Anuma, the ministry’s Permanent Secretary.
Anuma said the need for immediate action, urging hospitals to activate alert systems for patients exhibiting COVID-like symptoms.
The letter also highlighted the importance of collaboration and timely information-sharing among health institutions and the Federal Ministry of Health.
“Timely information sharing among relevant stakeholders including the Federal Ministry of Health will be vital for effective response strategies,” Anuma added.
XEC, which was first identified in Germany in June, has since spread to several countries, including the UK, the US, and Denmark.
By September, it had infected over 600 people. While the variant has new mutations that may aid its spread, scientists assert that vaccines should still help prevent severe cases.
