Senate to Engage Stakeholders, AGF on Controversial Tax Reform Bills

Date:

Senate President Godswill Akpabio declared during Thursday’s plenary that the Senate remains committed to representing Nigerians’ interests and will not succumb to external pressures. His remarks followed a point of order raised by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, addressing rumors about the suspension or withdrawal of deliberations on the Tax Reform Bills.

“The Senate cannot be bullied. Any reform we are convinced serves Nigerians will proceed. These bills contain provisions that are in the public’s best interest,” Akpabio asserted, dismissing media reports suggesting otherwise.

Senator Bamidele also criticized misinformation from social media and the press, urging the public to focus on verified facts. “We have not suspended or withdrawn deliberations on the tax reform bills. These are executive communications, and only the executive can withdraw them. Any attempt to intimidate the Senate is undemocratic,” he said.

To address contentious aspects of the bills, the Senate has formed a special committee representing Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. This committee, headed by Minority Leader Senator Abba Moro (PDP, Benue South), will engage with the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, governors, religious leaders, and business stakeholders to resolve uncertainties.

“We are not in a hurry. Public hearings and stakeholder consultations are imperative. If six weeks are insufficient, we will extend the time. Transparency and thoroughness are our priorities,” Akpabio emphasized.

Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, who presided over Wednesday’s session, confirmed that the executive arm supports the Senate’s call for a collaborative resolution of disagreements in the bills.

The Tax Reform Bills, forwarded by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in October, have faced significant opposition, particularly from northern stakeholders. The Senate’s actions demonstrate its commitment to carefully addressing the controversy while safeguarding the nation’s interests.
