The Minister of State for Works, Hon. Bello Goronyo, has delivered a stern directive to contractors managing government projects, emphasising the need for accountability and the end of abandoned or substandard works.
During a meeting with the South West zonal coordinators of the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) on Monday, Goronyo announced strict measures to address these issues.
He instructed the FERMA Managing Director to compile a list of non-compliant contractors, complete with their contact details, within a week.
The Minister warned that contracts could be revoked and reassigned to more capable hands if contractors fail to meet expectations.
“If they are not ready to do their job, revoke the contracts and hand them to those willing to deliver,” Goronyo said.
“Nigerians deserve value for their money. “Abandoned projects hamper economic growth, exacerbate unemployment, and impact national security.
Goronyo criticised the negative impact of abandoned projects on economic growth, unemployment, and national security.
He attributed the nation’s infrastructure deficits to years of neglect compounded by a rapidly growing population.
Highlighting Lagos as a vital economic hub, the Minister stressed the urgency of addressing its infrastructure challenges to sustain its pivotal role in driving Nigeria’s economy.
While acknowledging the current administration’s proactive approach under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Goronyo urged Nigerians to support government initiatives aimed at reversing the trend of infrastructural decay.
“We must ensure Nigerians get value for their money,” Goronyo stated, signaling a no-nonsense stance on the issue.
