President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended his congratulations to Alhassan Yahaya on his election as the President of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ). Yahaya clinched the position during the 8th Triennial National Delegates Conference held in Owerri on November 27, 2024.

In a statement released on Saturday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu lauded the NUJ for organizing a peaceful and orderly election. He commended the emergence of Yahaya and other newly elected executives, describing the process as a testament to the Union’s commitment to democratic values.

President Tinubu characterized Yahaya’s decisive victory as a reflection of the trust and confidence NUJ members place in his leadership capabilities. He highlighted Yahaya’s impressive track record, particularly his service as NUJ Deputy President, expressing optimism that his experience would foster positive change in Nigeria’s media landscape.

The President emphasized the pivotal role of the press in national development and urged the NUJ to embrace its constitutional duties with a renewed sense of patriotism. He called on the new leadership to address industry malpractices while upholding the principles of ethical and responsible journalism.

Reiterating his administration’s dedication to a free and independent press, Tinubu underscored the importance of collaboration between the government and the media in promoting democracy and social equity.

President Tinubu expressed hope that Yahaya’s tenure would herald a period of ethical growth and constructive dialogue within the media sector, strengthening its role as the Fourth Estate of the Realm.

Concluding his statement, the President wished Yahaya and his team success in advancing journalism and contributing to building a fair and equitable society.
