The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has launched the installation of over 4,000 prepaid meters for Band A and Band B customers under the Federal Government’s Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF) initiative.
In a statement on Friday, KEDCO announced that it had engaged certified Meter Asset Providers to oversee the deployment and installation of the meters across its franchise area.
The initiative, approved by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), aims to bridge Nigeria’s significant metering gap and eliminate estimated billing practices.
“Under this initiative, KEDCO has begun metering Band A and B customers in its continuous efforts to close the metering gap. Approved Meter Asset Providers will provide and install over 4,000 meters free of charge,” the company said.
The Meter Acquisition Fund is part of a broader strategy to address Nigeria’s estimated seven million unmetered electricity users. The program complements other metering efforts to ensure transparency in billing and improve cost recovery in the power sector.
According to KEDCO, beneficiaries of the free meters will be selected to ensure the sustainability and growth of the electricity distribution network.
“Meters deployed under this scheme are free. KEDCO will determine the beneficiaries, targeting the growth and long-term viability of the power sector,” the statement concluded.
The initiative is seen as a crucial step toward addressing the challenges of metering in Nigeria, ensuring fair billing practices, and improving service delivery for electricity consumers.
