Jamaica sign $6m Puma deal extension as Nigeria struggles with kits

Date:

While the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), led by Tonobok Okowa, continues to rely on government funding to procure kits and equipment—often inadequate for international competitions—the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) has announced a lucrative renewal of its partnership with global sportswear giant, Puma.

During its Annual General Meeting on Saturday, November 23, 2024, the JAAA revealed the extension of its longstanding partnership with Puma, which it claims surpasses a competing offer from Adidas worth approximately $6 million annually. However, details of the new deal remain undisclosed.

JAAA President Garth Gayle praised Puma for its continued support, highlighting its contributions to grassroots programs, high school initiatives, and flagship national events such as the Boys and Girls Championships and the Gibson Relays.

> “Puma has been an invaluable partner, especially during the challenging pandemic years. Their commitment far exceeds that of their competitors, ensuring we can continue to deliver excellence in athletics,” Gayle said, emphasizing that the renewed deal would strengthen Jamaica’s global dominance in athletics while fostering homegrown talent.

Nigeria’s Controversial PUMA Deal

In contrast, Nigeria’s AFN has faced controversies surrounding its own Puma sponsorship.

According to reports, the AFN’s prior agreement with Puma was marked by secrecy, with only two board members privy to the terms of the contract. These members reportedly negotiated the deal through a private company, bypassing the Federation’s constitution.

The non-disclosure agreement (NDA) reportedly prevented other officials, including the Secretary General, from accessing details of the arrangement. Furthermore, kits and equipment received from Puma were allegedly stored outside the Federation’s Secretariat, violating the 2017 amended AFN constitution, which designates the Secretary General as the custodian of all official documents and property.

The lack of transparency has drawn criticism, especially as the AFN continues to struggle with providing sufficient resources for its athletes at international competitions.

A Tale of Two Federations

The stark contrast between Jamaica and Nigeria’s approach to athlete sponsorship highlights the critical role of effective leadership and transparency in securing resources for national athletes. While Jamaica positions itself as a model of excellence and innovation in athletics sponsorship, Nigeria’s AFN remains embroiled in disputes that hinder its ability to support its athletes adequately.
