The Lagos State Building Control Agency has urged building owners and developers at Alaba International Market, in Ojo Local Government Area, to comply with the state’s building codes and regulations or face sanctions.
During a routine inspection on Thursday, LASBCA’s General Manager, Gbolahan Oki, expressed concerns over the structural state of many buildings undergoing renovations in the area.
He noted that most lacked essential documentation, including approved building plans, renovation permits, or authorisation letters from the agency.
Additionally, there was no evidence of non-destructive testing by the Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory to verify the buildings’ structural stability.
Oki emphasised that property owners and developers should take advantage of the ongoing Lagos State Amnesty Program, which runs until December 31, 2024, to regularise their building documents.
He warned that non-compliance would attract severe penalties.
“The Lagos State Government frowns on unapproved buildings,” Oki said.
“It is mandatory for all construction, renovation, or rehabilitation activities to have valid building plan approvals.”
To ensure better monitoring, the General Manager has requested the Alaba Amalgamated Association to provide a comprehensive list of all buildings under construction in the market.
This will enable LASBCA to conduct thorough supervision, stage inspections, and certification of ongoing projects.
