On Wednesday, November 20, Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced the removal of Ohieku Salami from his position as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal University of Health Sciences in Otukpo, Benue State.
The decision came in response to actions deemed “unbecoming of his office” and violations of established procedures.
A statement issued by the Director of Press for the Federal Ministry of Education, Folashade Boriowo, outlined the reasons for the dismissal, including Salami’s unprofessional conduct.
Among the offenses cited was Salami’s suspension of the university’s Vice-Chancellor without adhering to the proper procedural channels.
Despite the Ministry’s intervention and formal instructions to reverse the unlawful suspension, Salami refused to comply, further escalating the issue.
He was also accused of displaying “abusive and threatening behavior” towards ministry officials, including the Permanent Secretary.
Dr. Alausa stressed that such actions were detrimental to the Ministry’s supervisory role over the university and posed a threat to the institution’s governance and stability.
To address the situation and restore proper governance, the Minister has called for the appointment of a new Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council for the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo.
The Ministry’s statement emphasized the need for the university to function under the rule of law, due process, and accountability, reinforcing the importance of ethical leadership in academic institutions.
