Tinubu Set to Attend G20 Leaders’ Summit in Brazil This Sunday

Date:

President Bola Tinubu will depart Abuja on Sunday for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to attend the 19th G20 Leaders’ Summit, which will take place from November 18 to 19, 2024.

Tinubu’s participation follows an invitation from Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who currently holds the presidency of the G20, as confirmed in a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

The Summit will gather leaders from the world’s top 20 economies, along with representatives from the European Union, the African Union, and key multilateral financial institutions. Discussions will center on critical global issues, including combating hunger and poverty, global governance reforms, and advancing sustainable development and energy transition.

Nigeria has consistently advocated for reforms in global governance and has been a strong proponent for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.

During the summit, President Tinubu is also expected to engage in bilateral meetings aimed at advancing Nigeria’s socio-economic reforms. He will be accompanied by key government officials, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar; Ministers of Livestock Development, Idi Maiha; Art, Tourism, Culture and Creativity, Hannatu Musawa; Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Aliyu Abdullahi; and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Mohammed Mohammed.

This visit will mark Tinubu’s first trip to Brazil as President and his 31st foreign trip since taking office 17 months ago. To date, he has spent 125 days abroad, visiting 16 countries and logging over 267 flight hours. His past destinations include Malabo, London, Nairobi, New York, Riyadh, Berlin, and Doha, among others.
