Late Lagbaja gets Posthumous National Honour

Date:

President Bola Tinubu has posthumously conferred the national honour of Commander of the Federal Republic on the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja.

The honour was announced during the burial ceremony of the late Army Chief on Friday in Abuja. President Tinubu praised Lagbaja for his exemplary service to the nation and described him as one of his best appointees.

“In recognition of his outstanding military career and dedication to the nation, I have granted the late Chief of Army Staff the posthumous National Honour of Commander of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Tinubu said. He then invited Lagbaja’s wife, Maria, to receive the posthumous honour on his behalf.

The president spoke highly of Lagbaja’s legacy, calling him a “true soldier” whose commitment to Nigeria remained unwavering. He recalled the late COAS’s profound influence, noting, “He embodied the finest ideals of a patriot and soldier, with an abiding faith in the capability of our Armed Forces.”

Tinubu also lauded Lagbaja’s leadership, saying the late Army Chief was a trusted advisor and a man of prudent action who cared deeply for both the nation and the welfare of those who served under him.

“Lieutenant General Lagbaja was a thoroughbred professional soldier. His intellect and knowledge were invaluable to our nation, and his dedication to duty will never be forgotten. We have lost a leader who truly distinguished himself,” Tinubu remarked.

The president also urged the military to carry on Lagbaja’s work, stating, “Do not let death defeat us. Honor him by pressing on gallantly with your unfinished business.”

Lagbaja passed away on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, after a period of illness.
