Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has announced the suspension of all revenue collection in the state, with an emphasis on motor parks and similar collection points.
The decision was made on Wednesday, following his inauguration as governor the previous day.
Governor Okpebholo, alongside his deputy Dennis Idahosa, was sworn into office by the state’s Chief Justice, Daniel Okungbowa, at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.
In a statement issued by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, it was revealed that the suspension will remain in effect until further notice.
Okpebholo stated that the situation surrounding the state’s revenue collection process would be reviewed shortly.
The governor, in the same statement, directed the Edo State Commissioner of Police to enforce the suspension by arresting anyone caught continuing to collect revenue on behalf of the state.
He warned that any defiance of the order would be met with immediate legal action.
“This order is clear: no one is authorised to collect revenue on behalf of the state government until further notice,” Okpebholo said in the official statement.
Okpebholo also promised to address the underlying issues and concerns around the revenue collection process in due course.
The suspension affects various sectors across the state, particularly in motor parks, where revenue collection has been a point of contention.
Governor Okpebholo stressed that the suspension would remain indefinite until a new framework for revenue collection is established.
