Nwali eyes glory at Adowei Memorial Scrabble Championship

Date:

Former African Scrabble Champion, Enoch Nwali, has set his sights on reclaiming his position among the top contenders at the fifth Janet Adowei Memorial Scrabble Championship in Lagos.

Known for his aggressive and rapid play style, Nwali is determined to make an impact, despite some recent setbacks in major tournaments.

While he has been a dominant force in the Scrabble world, with notable victories such as the 2022 EEAST and fierce battles like his showdown with Timilehin Doko at the Ultimate Scrabble Showdown, some have noted a dip in his form.

Tournaments like the Lekki Scrabble Classics, the African Championship, and the South-West Opens have shown that the “Drummer Boy” might need to rediscover his best performance to get back to his former glory.

However, Nwali remains grounded and realistic in his approach.

“My main objective at the 5th JAMSC is to give a good account of myself, which would mean placing in the top three by the end of the event,” Nwali said.

The competition at the Chevron Recreational Club will be fierce. Aside from Nwali, competitors like his close friend and rival Timilehin Doko, Grand Master John Aiyedun, and other seasoned Scrabble players will be vying for supremacy.

With a prize of 750,000 naira and a trophy awaiting the top winner, the stakes are high.
Nwali has acknowledged the need for rest after a grueling schedule, which included recent international travel to Kigali, Rwanda, and plans to enter the tournament refreshed and focused.

He said the importance of preparation and mental readiness, knowing that nothing in Scrabble is guaranteed, no matter one’s previous titles.

With 18 rounds of intense competition ahead, all eyes will be on Nwali and his rivals as they battle for dominance at the Janet Adowei Memorial Scrabble Championship.

Host Ebikeme Adowei has promised another thrilling tournament, one that will surely keep Scrabble fans on the edge of their seats.
